Liberty Bell 7 Restoration

July 21, 2021

On July 20, 1999, nearly 38 years after it was lost to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, Liberty Bell 7 was resurrected from its watery grave. It was then brought to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas, for restoration by SpaceWorks, a division of the Cosmosphere, internationally known for spacecraft restoration and preservation as well as replica fabrication. Liberty Bell 7 Recovery

July 21, 2021

The Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft was recovered from the ocean floor and returned to Port Canaveral on July 21, exactly 38 years after its flight into space. Read more here.

Liberty Bell 7 Historic

July 21, 2021

On July 21, 1961, with a 15-minute suborbital flight of the Mercury spacecraft Liberty Bell 7, Gus Grissom became the second American in space. The flight was by-the-book until splashdown when the explosive-powered hatch jettisoned prematurely, flooding the capsule and Grissom’s space suit. Read more here

REPLICATION: “Apollo 13” Movie Props

Did you know that SpaceWorks, a division of the Cosmosphere, designed and built many of the props for the 1995 filmmany of the props for the 1995 film, Apollo 13? 

From gloves, astronaut suits, in-flight suits and boots, to the hatch and Hasselblad cameras — SpaceWorks created 80% of the props from the movie! Below are a few samples.

RESTORATION: The Apollo 13 Command Module, Odyssey

April 11, 2020

Images from 1995 to 1997 depicting the restoration of the Apollo 13 Command Module, Odyssey. Restoration took place in the Cosmosphere's Hall of Space Museum, so visitors could watch the progress. Restoration work done by SpaceWorks, a division of the Cosmosphere.
